Sorokousty Services February 19,2021
During Great Lent, a special services is held for members of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary (St. Mary’s) Parish who have fallen asleep in the Lord. These requiem services, known as “Sorokousty”, involve the reading of the individual names of all deceased family members of parishioners. “Sorokousty” literally means “forty mouths”, referring to an ancient practice of 40 monks or priests singing this memorial of our departed sisters and brothers.
